Improvement works at Southampton Common play area have hit unexpected delays.

The project is now expected to finish two to three weeks later than originally planned.

Contractors encountered unforeseen ground conditions, necessitating safety and durability improvements.

The recent hot weather has also impacted parts of the project.

A Southampton City Council spokesperson said: "The Common Play Area was originally scheduled to open next week (week commencing July 27).

"We know families are looking forward to enjoying the new play area and we thank them for their patience.

"Although the delay is disappointing, resolving these unforeseen issues now will ensure that the Common Play Area is built on solid foundations and will provide a safe, high quality facility for local children and families to enjoy for many years to come."

Further updates will be shared as the project progresses.
