A driver has been caught at nearly 50mph on a busy 30mph road in Hedge End.

Volunteers from the Hedge End community speed watch team were joined by a Hampshire police officer on roadside operation on Winchester Road near Hedge End.

The team, which covers Hedge End, West End and Botley recorded a top speed of 49mph in a 30mph limit.

Police said there were also multiple drivers travelling at more than 40mph during the session.

Officers highlighted the dangers of speeding, warning that being hit by a vehicle at 40mph instead of 30mph dramatically increases the risk of serious injury or death due to the much greater impact force.

A spokesperson said: "A very big thank you to the new residents and volunteers who have recently joined the team, and to the long-standing members. We are very grateful for your time and efforts to help improve the safety of the roads."
