Drugs worth over £160m seized at Port of Southampton

More than £160 million worth of drugs has been seized at the Port of Southampton over the course of a month.

Border Force officers uncovered the cocaine and cannabis during four separate discoveries at Southampton Port over the course of a month.

On June 28, officers found 477kg of cocaine worth £38 million hidden in a shipment of bananas.

A further 530kg of cocaine, valued at £47 million, was found later the same day in another container.

On July 10, officers seized 960kg of cocaine worth an estimated £76 million.

Just days later, 290kg of cannabis worth £1.2 million was discovered concealed in a shipment of hardwood flooring.

Jo White, Home Office minister, said: "We are one step ahead of these vile criminal gangs.

"Border Force has cost them tens of millions in under a month.

"These drugs fuel further offending, destroy lives and inflict misery on our communities.

"We will continue our relentless action to hit supply chains, protect the public and secure our borders."
