Met Office issues thunderstorm warning for Southampton

The warning is in place from 11am until 11.59pm today.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms could lead to disruption to transport, infrastructure, and outdoor activities.

The warning area covers the city to the west of the River Itchen, as well as northern parts of the New Forest and Eastleigh.

The Met Office said there is a "good chance" driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water, or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

Train services may also experience delays.

Lightning strikes could cause damage to some buildings and structures which could lead to some short-term loss of power and other services.

Some homes and businesses may experience flooding, resulting in damage to buildings or structures.

The Met Office has advised people to check road conditions if driving and to amend travel plans if necessary.

They also advised people to prepare for power outages in advance and consider whether their location is at risk of flash flooding.
