A "prolific" shoplifter has been jailed after stealing hundreds of pounds worth of laundry and skincare goods from shops.

Henok Beyene, aged 41 and of no fixed address, admitted six shop theft offences in Southampton, including stealing laundry products worth £570.50 from Asda and Sainsbury’s between July 6 and August 13.

He also stole Olay skincare products worth £484.88 from Superdrug on August 11.

He was sentenced to 40 weeks in prison - a little over nine months - having also breached a suspended sentence.

He was sentenced at Southampton Magistrates' Court on August 14, where he was described as a "prolific offender" who does not comply with court orders.

He was also ordered to pay £936.88 in compensation.

Beyene also admitted failing to provide a non-intimate sample for a Class A drugs test while in police detention on August 13.

No order for costs was made as compensation was prioritised.
