A Hampshire zoo will close its gates for the day as strong winds and heavy rain as Storm Austen hits the county.

Marwell Zoo announced it would be closed all day on Friday due to the expected weather conditions.

A spokesperson for Marwell said: "The safety of our animals, guests and staff will always be our highest priority."

The closure comes as Storm Austen brings the threat of strong winds and heavy rain to Hampshire with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for strong winds.

Visitors who have pre-booked tickets for Friday will receive an email and can use their tickets to visit on any date up to and including Sunday, November 15.

The zoo hopes to reopen on Saturday for its Wild Autumn event, but this will depend on weather conditions and safety checks being completed across the site.

Visitors have been urged to check the zoo's website for updates.
