Hey, guess what: I’m going on holiday next week and when I get there, I think I might be going to see someone I used to go out with a long time ago. Do you reckon it’s a good idea?

Do you mean you think you might run into her or you’re thinking about arranging to see her? It’s hard to know about old flames. In general, I think it’s better to regret the things you do rather than the things you don’t do – this logic would suggest you should see her.
But then again, I take it she lives where you’re going, rather than round here. If this is the case and something long-term is out of the question you could just be causing yourself a lot of heartache just to satisfy your curiosity.

It happened that I was going on holiday nearish where she lives, I let her know I was going to be in the country and she invited me to go see her...
It’s fair to say curiosity has got the better of me in that respect.

Don’t forget about the whole “old flame” can of worms. I’ve never done it myself, so I’m not really in a good position to offer advice, but seeing as how that’s not going to stop me, I’d say whether or not it's a good idea to see an old flame again depends on a number of factors including why you broke up and if it’s likely that either of you is still harbouring strong feelings
for the other person, which could just stir up a lot of upset. Hmm, I appear to be something of a gloom monger.

Gloom monger yes, but probably the voice of reason.
I’m not a serial old-flame rekindler though and – given that the woman in question lives in Canada – the prospect of anything developing is minimal anyway!
I’ll let you know what happens.

Well, I guess you can always have a holiday romance.
And if it turns into anything more that will be one of the most impressive long-distance relationships of all time! Good luck.
