SOMEWHERE deep in the New Forest lurks an amazing fellow who goes by the name of Gyppo.

His ability with words is on a par with Stuart Hall’s famously eloquent radio football summaries. His skill is akin to Matthew Le Tissier bemusing the Newcastle defence, Ronnie O’Sullivan making that famous five minute-and-a-few-seconds maximum 147 break and Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean skating for gold to Ravel’s Bolero.

In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if he wrote the advert that used to be on a massive hoarding just past St Denys station. In great big letters, it read: YOU ARE NOW ENTERING GOD’S COUNTRY, and right at the bottom: follow Matthew and the Saints every day – get in the know - The Daily Echo.

I was on a forum this week talking about the excellently laid-out double-page spread in today’s The Pink about ex-Saints star turned snooker coach Ken Jones, who was a member of Ted Bates’ 1965-66 side that won promotion to the old First Division for the first time in the club’s history. He has a few tales to tell.

And part two is yet to come next week on his snooker career.

Gyppo started with a bit of Latin: “Carpe diem (seize the day – thanks Google).”

“Come Saturday,” he added. “You'll be walking around with a big grin on your face...”

"And how are you today, Tim?"

"In The Pink, Old Chap. Absolutely in the pink."

Priceless. I wish I’d thought of that!
