ANOTHER dangerous biker has been banned from the road after he was caught doing a wheelie at 71mph.

Richard Hicks, pictured, pulled the stunt just days after he had been caught on camera riding at 100mph in a 40mph zone on the same stretch of road.

Now Hicks, 27, has been banned from driving for 18 months.

Hicks was found guilty by magistrates at Newport on the Isle of Wight of dangerous driving, excess speed and failing to identify the driver after the events on Horsbridge Hill in Newport last April.

It comes after the Daily Echo reported last week how 22- year-old Steven Skilton put lives on the line by pulling an 82mph wheelie on one of the busiest roads in Southampton.

During the trial it was revealed that Hicks was spotted by two police officers doing a wheelie for an estimated 300 yards. In court he admitted to overtaking in the confines of a pedestrian crossing.

Facial mapping techniques were used to match the bike and clothing recorded by the speed cameras with Hicks’ bike and leathers.

Hicks, of Roud, Ventnor, was also given 12 points on his licence and was ordered to pay trial costs of £670 and expert witness costs of £905.

He was also given a sixmonth supervision order, 180 hours’ community work and was ordered to take an extended re-test.

Julian Hewitt, spokesman for the Safer Road Partnership, said: “There is a problem with a minority of antisocial bikers driving dangerously both on the Island and on the mainland. There have been three motorbike rider fatalities on the Island so far this year and 14 on the mainland.

“A heavy motorbike travelling at very high speed could have devastating effects on anyone or anything it hit.

“We are pleased with the results of this case, which should send out a strong message to those bikers who think they are above the law. Using local police, intelligence officers and image analysts we will bring them to justice.”

Skilton pulled his dangerous, high-speed stunt while riding along Northam Bridge at 82mph, nearly three times the 30mph speed limit.

It was the seventh time the 22-year-old had been caught breaking the speed limit in the space of four weeks along the same road – and the third time he had been clocked at more than 80mph.

All the offences occurred between April 25 and May 23 this year.
