Angie McMillan, from Hythe, braved the clippers to raise money for the charity Marie Curie because her pal Lorraine Bull is going through gruelling treatment for breast cancer.

Despite admitting to a few last-minute nerves, the 39-year-old, who works at Tesco Metro in Lymington, said the challenge was worth it.

In front of a crowd of shoppers at the High Street store, she said: “It feels cold, very light and very different and slightly like Velcro.

“All my friends think I'm mad anyway so I don’t think they'll be shocked.”

Lorraine, 46, was too ill to make it to the charity event, but her daughter Dawn Veal – a hairdresser from Blackfield – was on hand to carry out the close shave.

Angie, who hopes to raise hundreds of pounds for the Marie Curie Cancer Care, added: “It’s not just for my friend it’s for all the people that the charity wants to help at home that don’t want to be in a hospital.

It’s for people who want to be in their own homes for as long as possible.”
