THERE are now two centenarians at a Winchester nursing home after great grandmother Gladys Nichols reached the milestone.
She was born on April 2 1909, in which year Edward VII was on the throne and the first rugby match was played at Twickenham.
Mrs Nichols grew up in London and was a typist with Unilever before working in recruitment at the War Office in World War II. Having married husband Richard in 1942, she then spent more than 20 years living in the New Forest before moving to Winchester in 2008.
Among the people celebrating her milestone at Bereweeke Court nursing home this week were Mrs Nichol’s daughter Stephanie Baxter and fellow centenarian Lena Atkinson who celebrated her 100th birthday at the Bereweeke Road home on February 20.
