THEY are some of the most famous names associated with their club.
Now Saints legends Matt Le Tissier, Lawrie McMenemy and Mick Channon have teamed up to help the ailing club in its hour of need, while giving fans a nostalgic night to remember.
On Thursday the trio will take centre stage for an exclusive question- and-answer session, offering supporters an insight into life at The Dell and St Mary’s.
It will be the first public appearance at the club by former England striker Mr Channon since a major car crash last August.
He was left with a broken arm and punctured lung, but his best friend from the racing world, Tim Corby, was killed.
All proceeds from the event, which has been organised by comedian Mike Osman, will go straight to the Save Our Saints campaign keeping the club running while administrators try to find a buyer.
Mr Osman will be compering the evening, which will also feature an appearance by ex-Saint Mark Dennis, once he comes off air from his Radio Hampshire evening show.
There will also be an auction of exclusive lots, including signed shirts and other “money can’t buy”
prizes.
Former manager Mr McMenemy, who was in charge when Saints won the FA Cup in 1976, said he was only too happy to do anything he could to help the club when he realised how much danger it is in.
Parent company Southampton Leisure Holdings collapsed almost a fortnight ago with debts totalling more than £30m.
As reported in the Daily Echo, ex-chairman Leon Crouch has set fans a target of raising £500,000 just to cover the operational costs to keep the club running to the end of the season.
“I know people are desperate for the club to survive and will do their bit, but in the current climate money is tight for a lot of people,” said Mr McMenemy.
“We are asking for a donation of £20.
There are just under 500 places available and if we can fill that then it’s another £10,000.”
He added: “I was amazed when I was made aware of the perilous situation that the club was in, and we all desperately wanted to do something to help out.”
