CIVIC chiefs are examining a new government framework that may affect proposals for a container terminal on the edge of the New Forest National Park.
Associated British Ports (ABP) has launched a second attempt to gain permission for a massive dock development at Dibden Bay – six years after its original scheme was blocked.
The company’s new master plan says facilities are needed because port traffic is expected to rise by 59 per cent by 2030. But the huge area of reclaimed land between Southampton Water and the national park has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is subject to a large number of regulations that aim to protect wildlife.
The original scheme to develop it was thrown out on environmental grounds following a 13-month public inquiry.
Earlier this month, New Forest District Council’s ruling Cabinet agreed to lodge a formal objection to the latest bid.
Now Hampshire County Council is considering its response to a new National Policy Statement on Ports, which sets out the Government’s policy on the need for ports development.
