SCORES of residents have had their say on the controversial Go Ape plan for a high wire adventure course near Southampton.

A total of 130 comments were submitted to Eastleigh Borough Council during a consultation on the planning application – with the vast majority saying they are opposed to the scheme.

Just 26 were in favour of the tree top assault course proposed for Itchen Valley Country Park, while the remaining 104 were against.

The plans have angered people living near the park, off Allington Lane, in West End, since they were first revealed by the Daily Echo in June this year.

After months of talks with the council and discussions with residents, Go Ape submitted an official application last month, sparking a formal public consultation before planners decide whether to approve the scheme.

One of the documents submitted contained a 154-name petition of people against the proposals.

Among the concerns raised against the plans are fears about the impact on nature and conservation, effects on other park users and traffic implications.

The site lies just yards from the River Itchen, much of which is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and campaigners are worried a commercial venture would damage the important chalk stream.

“This is not a NIMBY [Not In My Back Yard] issue, it’s about the future of a public park owned by all the people of Eastleigh,” said campaigner Margaret Raff.

Supporters believe the plan would improve park facilities, provide a greater family day out, make the park more popular and reduce the need to travel to Go Ape parks further afield.

The leisure proposal, which has seen disputes between council chiefs and objectors over protest signs and heated debate at the West End parish council, will be decided next Monday.

Councillor Rupert Kyrle, chairman of the Hedge End, West End and Botley Local Area Committee, said: “I am pleased that so many people have taken the opportunity to let us know their thoughts and views on the Go Ape application.

“These will be considered by councillors as part of the decision making process.”

The Hedge End, West End and Botley Local Area Committee will make their decision at their meeting at the Hedge End 2000 centre at 7pm.
