HE is best known for spotting “billy bargains” and “bobby dazzlers” at auctions and car boot sales up and down the country.

But when perma-tanned television presenter David Dickinson turned his hand to hairdressing, he called in Southampton’s original celebrity stylist to give him a helping hand.

Self-styled hairdresser to the stars Trevor Mitchell gave the antiques expert, nicknamed the Duke, a masterclass in how to cut hair in a pilot episode for his new daytime show The David Dickinson Show.

The presenter then challenged Trevor to break his own world record of one minute 11 seconds for the fastest ever haircut by allowing him only a minute to complete the cut in a feature called Duelling with the Duke.

Trevor, who found fame in the 1970s perming the hair of celebrities including Kevin Keegan and Peter Shilton, said: “When David said I only had a minute to complete the hair cut I told him it couldn’t be done.

“But I managed it – and then after some tips from me so did he.

“David told the model he was going to give him a “Beckham” in under a minute.

“I didn’t think he’d do it but actually I think he probably beat me – he did a great job and his hair cut looked terrific!

“The audience absolutely loved it.

“Sadly there was no-one there from the Guinness Book of Records so my old record still stands.”

Trevor, who runs six salons across Southampton, added that David Dickinson, known for his catchphrases including “cheap as chips”, was a “tremendous character”.

The show will be broadcast in February.
