MORE than 50 key Southampton industry figures are to meet for a major seminar this week to look at how city and port can better work together.

The event, to be held this Friday at the City Cruise Terminal, will examine issues facing the port and the city. It is being supported by the European Union as part of a project on the Renewal of the Economic Prosperity of Port Cities, called the NEW EPOC project, which involves partner port cities such as Bremen, Bilbao, and Trieste.

Southampton continues to benefit from growth in the ports industry and city bosses say the challenge now centres on how best to retain and expand its leading role.

Subjects for discussion include tourism related to the cruise industry and home port growth, port-of-call business, and the supply of goods and services to the cruise industry.

Speakers include Jimmy Chestnutt of the Chamber of Commerce, Southampton Test MP Alan Whitehead and new Port of Southampton boss Doug Morrison as well.

"We need to examine best practice across Europe and build on what is undoubtedly a success story," says the leader of Southampton City Council, Councillor Adrian Vinson.
