ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners staged a protest outside a Southampton Land Rover dealership as part of a national day of action.

About 15 Greenpeace protestors stood outside the forecourt of Hunters (Southampton) Land Rover in The Avenue on Saturday.

Some locked themselves to chains which they tried unsuccessfully to attach to the steering wheels of some of the vehicles on display.

Campaigner Sarah Duthie said: "The reason we are here is because these are fuel inefficient cars that are contributing to world climate change.

"They used to be work vehicles for the countryside but now they are shamelessly marketed as an urban run-around where the biggest obstacle they will come across is a speed bump."

Protestors waved placards and collected signatures of support on Greenpeace postcards which will be sent to the car showroom.

The general manager of Hunters, Andrew Wilson, was unavailable for comment.
