THE 22nd annual Southampton 'Run In The Park' 10k saw new champions.
Mark Campbell of Southampton Running Club won on his debut run at Netley's Royal Victoria Country Park, while the women's race was a triumph for evergreen veteran-50 athlete Sara Rhimes of Eastleigh Running Club.
Against runners up to 20 years her junior, Rhimes won with 31 seconds to spare over vet-40 athlete Tina Turner of Denmead Striders. Rhimes' young Eastleigh clubmate, Donna Tew, was third, with Patricia Daas (vet-40), Vicki Davies (vet-40) and Sarah Innes ninth, 14th and 19th as Eastleigh's women scooped senior and veteran team titles.
Campbell negotiated the pleasant parkland course in 32min 43 sec, giving him a comfortable 20-second victory margin over past winner Mark Hargreaves of Bournemouth AC.
Stubbington Green Runners packed three runners - Zippy Grice, Tony Allen (vet-40) and Mark Le Gassick - into the top nine to beat Southampton Running Club to the senior men's team title. Southampton were also runners-up in the veteran men's team event, this time to City of Portsmouth.
Race organiser Richard Pearson reported: "We had about 430 entries, more than last year and pretty near the race record."
