Rufus Wainwright, The Lighthouse, Poole

HOW many bands do you know who strip down to their undies during the encore?

Well, Rufus Wainwright and his incredibly talented band of men and women did.

Standing resplendent in a blue sequined thong with a Miss Poole sash and butterfly wings, balancing on red stilettos, Wainwright looked just gorgeous - and he sounded even better.

There were standing ovations and three encores as the audience showed their appreciation for the truly electrifying performance.

Rufus Wainwrights's lilting voice takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

He filled the auditorium with his luminous energy, singing and accompanying himself on the piano and merging with his band.

His intricate songs verge on operatic, tinged with country and a good helping of melodrama. You can't help but be in awe of his talent.

And then there was his band. Singing and playing a handful of instruments each, together they create beautiful music.

The audience left wanting more after more than two hours on stage - and that's no bad sign.
