Hamble Sea Angling Club members were on fine form during a CIU four-a-side knockout boat competition off the Needles on the Keyhaven-based Lady M.

Hamble's Tony Spridgeon, Rob Shattock, Ray Ashby and Neil Powdrill boated 119 fish (150lb 8oz) while Hill Park A's Jason Sherwood, Paul Currie, Graham Robert and Dave Woolridge recorded 35 weighing 48lb. Species included five smoothhound, 16 black bream, two whiting, 55 dogfish, 75 pouting and a three-bearded rockling.

Spridgeon also did well during a freelance boat trip from Littlehampton, boating numerous black bream, the heaviest topping 4lb.

More than £500 was raised for the Save the Children Fund and Swanage Hospital during a 50-peg charity open beach competition organised by Swanage club members along their Town beach to the measure-and-return system.

The good variety of species recorded included dogfish, ballan and corkwing wrasse, plaice, sole, turbot, pout, pollack and big shore rockling.

The pool for the longest round fish was won by Ken Mason with a 56cm dogfish. The flatfish pot was shared, Martin Bridge landing a 26cm plaice and Pete Bullock a 26cm turbot. Overall winner, who collected £200, was Chris Clark from Lymington who landed a dozen fish worth 235 points, his best a 37cm shore rockling. Runner-up (115 points) was Darren Cox. Ken Mason had 93 points.

The top three anglers were all pegged in the fancied A section. Top performer in B section was Reg Clough from East Woodyates who recorded a brace of pouting.

The following day Chris Clark was again in match-winning form when he won the £500 top prize in the Gravesend Open, which attracted 164 competitors to the Thames Estuary. Clark recorded five pouting up to 29cm and two silver eels.

The Solent Challenge inter-club first-round fixture along the deep-water section at Magazine Lane saw pout, flounders and dogfish. S Turner won with 2lb 12.25oz, including the heaviest 2lb 4.25oz doggie. Runner-up was S Pitman with 2lb 4.5oz. J Milne had 1lb 15.25oz. Ashlett SAC were top team on 76 points.

Others: Calshot Activities SAC 73, Army Angling Association 73, Perry's Plus 30, Bells Sports 24.

A 5lb 6oz wrasse was landed from Hengistbury Head by Robert Foyle during a daylight freelance session. The 37-year-old electronics engineer from New Milton used ragworm presented on a size two hook at the very end of the groyne during a flooding tide. Foyle landed several other wrasse up to 3lb along with two pollack and a small plaice. All the fish were returned alive.

Dogfish, pout, shore rockling, wrasse, silver eels and pollack supplied limited action during the Rover's Tackle pegged catch-and-release midweek open along the Clarence Wall. Mark Vinter won with 107 points from Dave Edwards (105).

Barry Mapson and Chris Clark tied third with 83. The pool for the longest fish went to Vinter with a 58cm doggie.

Poole Dolphins SAC stage their open bream competition on Sunday, sponsored by Poole Sea Angling Centre, with competitors allowed to fish from both charter and privately owned boats. Competitors will only be allowed to weigh in one bream. Tickets are £10 plus a £1 pool for the heaviest bream, but competitors must either supply or book their own boat. SHIRLEY SAC: A shore competition along Haslar Wall attracted 34, 16 recording 28 flounders, dogfish, plaice, pout and rockling. Heaviest was a 1lb 3.75oz dogfish bag by Mick Teague. Peter Jeans won with three fish (1lb 7.5oz).

Others: Mick Teague 1lb 5.75oz, Sue Thompson 1lb 1.75oz, Glen Murray 12.25oz and John Bell 8.75oz.

The only successful junior was George Manning with three fish weighing 10.75oz. RED DEER SAC: Black bream, garfish, mackerel, ballan wrasse, spotted rays, pollack pout and dogfish supplied action during the latest large boat fixture. Peter Stotesbury won with 183 points from Nigel McLoughlin (130), Marcus Wingate (84), Ian Gibbs (82), Gary Lister (52) and Chris Lovell (37).

BOURNEMOUTH & DISTRICT SAA: Smoothhound, dogfish, flounders and shore rockling supplied most action during a shore competition along the Milford Shingle Bank where Steve Bishop won with a 3lb 9oz smoothhound. Runner-up Steve Blehs also caught a smoothhound (2lb 0.50oz). Derek Neilling and Steve Blowers both landed a dogfish weighing 1lb 8oz and Jeffery Fisk a 15.5oz flounder.

SOUTHAMPTON SAC: The Netley section of Southampton Water saw the annual spring fair beach competition, where 22 members took part. Andy Baines won the senior section with 69 points ahead of Sally Hipwell (36) and Bill Bianes (35). Katie Gunn won the junior section with a flounder (1lb 0.5oz) measuring 35cm, which collected the pool for the heaviest fish.
