SUN worshippers are being invited to get their moles checked out - at the same time as doing their shopping.

Dermatology doctors will be on hand at Marks & Spencer in WestQuay shopping centre, Southampton, on Wednesday May 25.

Shoppers will be able to drop by between 9.30am and 4.30pm to have an expert eye cast over any moles they have concerns about.

The team from Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust will work out of six changing rooms in the lingerie department as well as from rooms in the male changing area.

Experts will also offer advice on having fun in the sun without putting your health at risk.

The mole watch day, part of national Sun Awareness Day, is a joint initiative involving the hospitals trust, Macmillan Cancer Relief, Wessex Cancer Trust, Cancer Research UK and Marks & Spencer.

More than 200 people were inspected at last year's event - 64 men and 151 women.

Almost a quarter were referred to their GP or a consultant dermatologist for further action.

One woman was found to have two melanomas - the most serious form of skin cancer, which can be life-threatening.

A further five people - two men and three women - were told they had a high likelihood of melanoma.

Denise Hancock, clinical nurse specialist for skin cancer and melanoma, urged anyone with concerns about their moles to get checked over on mole watch day.

Although the free drop-in service is open to all ages, she stressed melanomas were extremely rare in children under adolescent age.
