EVER been asked in for a drink by the neighbours? Well, if they're anything like Beverly - the monstrous hostess in Abigail's Party - then make a polite, but firm refusal!

Bishopstoke Players' production of Mike Leigh's kitsch comedy transports us back to the 1970s, when lava lamps were in vogue, dcor was orange, brown and avocado, and sideboards were a best-seller.

The play witnesses an uneasy social gathering at the home of Beverly and Laurence. The overbearing hostess nags and belittles her husband before rounding on the mousy Angela with a series of veiled insults. And all that's before she flirts, without caution, with Angela's husband, Tony. Completing the motley crew is divorcee Sue, who frets her way through the evening, concerned with the antics of her teenage daughter, Abigail, who is throwing a party next door.

Bishopstoke Players have been raising money for NCH (National Children's Home) since 1947 and in that time has raised thousands for this worthy cause. Profits from Abigail's Party will also be donated to the charity.

Katherine Linsley Hood, Regional Fundraiser for NCH in the area explained how important the funds and profile the Bishopstoke Players give to NCH is.

"NCH relies on the support from the communities to help continue the work we are able to do with over 80,000 children each year. The money raised by the Bishopstoke Players makes a considerable difference to the charity. Without the continuing support of groups such as these, unfortunately our projects would be unable to continue," she said.

So, if you fancy doing some good and enjoying a little light snobbery with your cheese and pineapple on sticks, head along to Bishopstoke Memorial Hall - just don't take your neighbours along!
