We all know the "Staying up with Harry and Jim" song by now, but over on the east side of Southampton the chant has been slightly different.

"Staying up with Danny and Jim" is the dressing room favourite at Hamble ASSC, who are fighting tooth and nail to stave off relegation after 18 years in the Wessex top flight.

Until recently the task looked impossible, but under the enthusiastic guidance of Danny Bowers and Alan Ball's son, Jimmy, the Planemakers go into tomorrow final game at Bemerton Heath Harlequins with half a hope of survival.

They need to win at Western Way and hope that third-to-bottom Portland United suffer another away-day calamity at Fareham Town to go with last week's 6-0 caning at Cowes.

Hamble already have a history as masters of the great escape having scored in the very last minute of the 2001/2 season to send another Dorset side, Swanage & Herston, down instead.

A repeat performance on Saturday would speak volumes for the motivational powers of "Danny and Jim" who have inspired a five-match unbeaten run, including three clean sheets.

"It's going to be a hard thing to pull off, but every player believes we can do it," said Bowers. "When we met Bemerton three weeks ago, they played us off the park but we managed to get a draw, so anything's possible.

"I know they played well at Winchester last week, but everybody raises their game when they go there and I'm hoping that tomorrow, with nothing much to play for, they'll just be seeing the season out."

With no game last Saturday, Bowers ran up a hefty phone bill checking on the score at Cowes. He laughed: "Forty-three times I called them! I had to apologise to the gentleman who kept answering the phone and told him I owed him a beer!"

Although Fareham's form has been disappointing of late, Bowers reckons they will put the effort in tomorrow - if only to avoid another long trip to Portland.

He said: "I'm sure Fareham's players would much rather go to Hamble than Portland and I think that will play a part. I honestly believe that if we win at Bemerton we'll stay in the league because I can't see Portland getting anything at Fareham."

Unfortunately for Hamble, one half of the "Danny and Jim" partnership will not be around tomorrow. Ball jetted off to America this week to do some football coaching in Seattle.

"He's told me he'll have his phone on, but losing him for the last game is a bit of nightmare because he's fantastic to have around in the dressing room," said Bowers.

"He's got great character and he's an excellent coach. We've got to win it for Jimmy."

*Portland boss Dave Court was bitterly disappointed in the aftermath of Cowes, but still feels the two-point advantage - plus superior goal difference - will work in their favour.

"It's in our own hands, which is important," he said. "I'd much rather be in our position than Hamble's, but it's going to be an interesting finish. We'll be giving it everything we've got to get that result at Fareham."
