R 'n' B star Lemar and rock band Rooster have been announced as the first acts to play at this summer's Power in the Park.

The annual music extravaganza takes place on Southampton Common on June 5.

Fader, a three-piece girl punk band, and Free Faller, who have been labelled as the new McFly will also play at the one-day event - now in its 11th year.

This year's four-hour-long music marathon is expected to attract 30,000 fans from around the south.

Since turning down the chance to study pharmaceuticals at Cardiff University and starring in BBC's Fame Academy, Lemar has become on one of the most successful solo singers in British music with two platinum albums and a string of top ten hits.

The Brit and MOBO winner played a sell-out gig at Southampton's Guildhall on Saturday as part of his current UK tour though this will be his first performance at Power in the Park.

Rooster are also big favourites in the south having played two sell-out shows in Portsmouth this year already.

Keep a lookout in your Daily Echo for further announcements on who will appear at the event over coming weeks.

TICKETS for Power in the Park will be on sale this year for the first time in the event's 11-year history.

Supported by O2, they are £10 and on sale now and organisers are expecting them to sell fast.

A donation of £1 from each sale will go to Power FM's Help a Local Child charity, which over the last 18 months has helped hundreds of disadvantaged children in the south. Organiser are hoping to raise at least £30,000 from this year's event. Any money left over after costs will also be ploughed back into the charity.
