THE MoD has launched an investigation after a laptop computer allegedly containing secure files was found at a council tip in Winchester.

Martin Dunn, a car parts manager, was hunting for computer components at the Bar End recycling centre when a woman gave him a laptop she was about to bin.

It was said to contain files detailing emergency plans in case of a terrorist attack on military bases in Hampshire, including the AGC base at Worthy Down.

An MoD spokesman said: "We're trying to establish what's on the laptop and see what, if anything, has gone wrong.

"We're not even sure if it's one of ours."

He added that the inquiry was likely to last several weeks.
