COMMONWEALTH Games medal winner Steve Harrison, who since spent more than 30 years coaching, has found out how much his efforts have been appreciated.

Romsey and Totton Swimming Club thanked him for 20 years service by organising a surprise celebration.

Harrison, 47, whose long and distinguished swimming career included a silver medal with the England medley relay team at the Commonwealth Games, became chief coach to Hampshire county swim team in 1994 and was a committee member for the Hampshire centre of excellence for swimming for four years.

Romsey and Totton club chairman Mike Hunter said: "I can't overestimate what he has done for the kids he has coached. He has given them determination and self-confidence, setting them up for their lives ahead."

The celebration came as a shock to Harrison. He thought he was heading out for a birthday meal but was diverted to Crosfield Hall, Romsey to find more than 200 past and present members of the club, including Romsey MP Sandra Gidley, waiting for him.

They included a This Is Your Life presentation among the entertainment and presented him with a saxophone, which he has always wanted.

Harrison said: "I got so much out of my own swimming career and I believe that all the kids get something positive out of the club."

Chairman Hunter added: "There are very few people who have his commitment. I am grateful to him for what he has done for my children - and he's done the same for hundreds of others."

Harrison plans to carry on coaching at the club for at least another five years.
