THE village carnival junior disco: Attracted 20 entries for the carnival princess.

The winner was Alice Lounton, with Hollie Fearnley as her deputy.

Rose Miles will be the princess' attendant, while Aidan Day was selected as the prince and David Lennon as his escort.

Howard Bentley provided the music for the disco, which was enjoyed by all the children.

BASING House: During April the site will be open to the public each week from Wednesday to Sunday, between 2pm and 6pm.

SLAUGHTER Close: Your regular columnist reported that this was at the corner of Crown Lane and The Street.

My investigations have turned up an old map, dated 1875-7, which can be found at www.old-maps.co.uk

This shows it to be the field running alongside Redbridge Lane between the bridge and the footpath leading to Basing Fen, and was the site of a battle during the Civil War.

The map also shows the route of the Basingstoke Canal through Old Basing as well as some interesting place names.

THIS is probably my last time as your village correspondent as Cyril Mullet is due back next week.

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you for your forbearance.
