HENRI CAMARA was the only Saints player to score in the weekend World Cup qualifiers.

The 28-year-old on-loan striker was on target as Senegal strolled to a 6-1 victory over Liberia in their African qualifying group.

Camara was one of the stars of the Senegal side that took the last World Cup by storm, beating holders France in the opening game and later dumping Sweden out - Camara scoring twice in a 2-1 win .

Camara scored in the second half of a victory which also saw goals from Bolton's controversial forward El-Hadji Diouf (2), Khalilou Fadiga - the Bolton striker briefly linked with a move to St Mary's in January 2004 - Abdoulaye Diagne-Faye and Moussa N'Diaye.

Senegal now top their group on goal difference from Zambia.

Camara has no midweek game so should be fresh to face Chelsea at St Mary's next Saturday (5.15pm).

There were mixed fortunes for the two Saints players in the Swedish squad which won 3-0 in Bulgaria to stay top of their qualifying group.

Anders Svensson won his 57th cap by playing the 90 minutes - he set up the opening goal for Arsenal's Freddie Ljungberg with a precise cross - but Mikael Nilsson didn't get the chance to add to his 24 caps.

Having fallen out of favour with Harry Redknapp in recent months, Nilsson has also lost his place in the Swedish national team - he was a regular in Euro 2004 but wasn't even on the bench in Bulgaria.

Nigel Quashie played the full 90 minutes for Scotland in their 2-0 defeat in Italy in Walter Smith's first match in charge. Quashie was booked after 50 minutes for unsportsmanlike behaviour in a defeat which still leaves them without a qualifying win in four attempts.

Neil McCann, who hasn't featured for Saints in the Premiership since the 2-1 loss at Newcastle on January 15, came on as a sub for the last 15 minutes.

Antti Niemi sat on the Finland subs bench for 90 minutes and watched Bolton's Jussi Jaaskelainen concede four goals in a 4-3 loss.

Saints striker Kenwyne Jones, currently on loan to Stoke, played 73 minutes as Trinidad and Tobago were hammered 5-1 in a CONCAFAF World Cup qualifier in Guatemala.

On Friday night, two Saints youngsters were in Under-21 action.

Kyle Critchell was introduced as a late sub as Wales U beat Austria 1-0 - Yeovil's ex-Saints midfielder Arron Davies started the match - while on-loan defender Callum Davenport played the full game in England's 2-2 draw against Germany.
