A MAN was attacked with what is believed to have been a samurai sword during an attempted robbery in the New Forest last night.

The victim was walking along an alleyway in the centre of New Milton when he was confronted by a man wielding a 2ft sword or machete.

No property was taken but the victim suffered a cut to his hand in the attack, which happened at about 9.20pm.

Today the Mayor of New Milton, Goff Beck, spoke of his "total shock" at the incident.

Cllr Beck, who is also the district council's Cabinet member for crime and disorder, said: "I've never heard of this sort of behaviour in our town before.

"Generally speaking New Milton is a quiet, totally safe town. My reaction to what

happened last night is one of total shock. It could have been fatal.

"It's vital that the man is apprehended and this potentially lethal weapon is removed from his possession."

Inspector Steve Wakeford of Hampshire Constabulary said the attack took place in an alleyway near Trident Taxis in Whitefield Road.

He added: "A man in his thirties was attacked with what is believed to have been either a machete or a samurai sword.

"It's not been confirmed what the item was, but that's the description given."

The attacker is described as 6ft 2in, tanned or Asian, with a shaved head and "stubbly" hair on the top.

He was wearing dark sports clothing.

Police say the man should not be approached.

Anyone who may have seen the assailant in the area or witnessed the attack itself should call New Milton CID on 0845 045 4545.
