THE AVIATOR (12A): Martin Scorsese's lengthy biopic of reclusive industrialist Howard Hughes, paints a vivid and sumptuous portrait of the Hollywood golden age. Leonardo DiCaprio is incredibly assured as the tormented mogul with strong support from Cate Blanchett, Alan Alda and Alec Baldwin.

BLADE: TRINITY (15): Having twice been thwarted by Blade, the vampire hordes gather deep in the Syrian Desert to orchestrate their most daring plan yet: to resurrect Dracula, the progenitor of their race.

CLOSER (15): Photographer Anna can't resist the charms of manipulative novelist Dan, despite being in a happy relationship with her doctor boyfriend Larry and the fact that he also has a highly attractive girlfriend. The repercussions for all four characters are messy and unexpected in this tightly acted and well-scripted drama.

ELEKTRA (12A): Jennifer Garner plays Elektra, who comes back from the dead to become a deadly assassin for hire. She soon decides to save her intended 12-year-old victim instead, in a typical Hollywood action yarn.

ELLA ENCHANTED (PG): Using a similar formula to cult classic The Princess Bride this clever re-imagining of the Cinderella fairytale is set in a sassy world of giants, elves, witches and talking serpents.

HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS (15): A visual treat in which every frame shimmers with colour in a gravity-defying extravaganza of death-defying swordsmanship and acrobatics. Director Yimou Zhang successfully combines the incredible action sequences with a tender romance.

THE INCREDIBLES (U): A family of superheroes, forced into suburban anonymity 15 years ago, emerge from retirement to battle evil. Unmissable computer-animated masterpiece from the makers of Toy Story and Finding Nemo, with great voice work and superb set pieces.

LADDER 49 (12A): Joaquin Phoenix plays Jack Morrison, a rookie firefighter assigned to the close-knit Baltimore firehouse run by Chief Kennedy. Tragedy looms large during a warehouse blaze when a floor gives way, trapping Jack. Can his friends save him?

MILLION DOLLAR BABY (12A): Clint Eastwood plays Frankie Dunn, a grizzled boxing trainer who reluctantly agrees to take on waitress Maggie Fitzgerald, who is desperate to escape her dead-end job. The result is a brilliant and moving film.

THE POLAR EXPRESS (U): A colourful animation about the magic of Christmas involving an eight-year-old boy who is whisked off to the North Pole and a meeting with Santa Claus on board a gleaming steam train.

RAY (15): Biopic of the famous pianist and singer Ray Charles featuring a sensational central performance from Jamie Foxx, which captures the charisma and energy of the man.

TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE (15): Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the anarchic geniuses responsible for South Park, put their politically incorrect, foul-mouthed spin on Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet with this adults-only puppet romp.

WHITE NOISE (15): Horror thriller starring Michael Keaton as a successful architect, whose life is thrown into turmoil when his wife dies. Life gets a whole lot more confusing though when it seems she's trying to contact him from the other side.
