DEJAN Stefanovic has urged the FA not to take any action against Calum Davenport - despite claiming he was the victim of an alleged headbutted by the Saints defender.

Davenport, on loan from Spurs, made no contact with Stefanovic but the Pompey man believes his fellow centre back was lucky to stay on the pitch during the first half of Saturday's FA Cup fifth round clash.

But Stefanovic is still prepared to forgive and forget - and he wants the FA to do the same.

He said: "It was a small incident but I saw one game in the Premiership that was exactly the same situation and the referee sent the player off.

"It was similar to when Lomana Lua Lua was sent off for putting his head against Andy Todd's when we played Blackburn - but I don't think any further action should be taken."

Pompey missed out on former Middlesbrough player Juninho as the transfer window closed last night.

The Brazilian was not granted a work permit so remains with Celtic, and Pompey also abandoned plans to sign ex-Saints trialist striker Dmtri Bulykin for £1.1m.

The Dinamo Moscow player's poor fitness was a factor.

Midfielder Eric Djemba Djemba rejected Pompey in favour of Aston Villa to complete his £1.3m move from Manchester United.

But new boy Alexander Rodic, a 24-year-old striker snapped up on a free from Slovenian champions Gorica, will be available to make his Premiership debut at home to Middlesbrough tonight.

And Stefanovic believes that Pompey will take confidence from their performance at St Mary's.

He said: "We played very good football against Southampton and if we play like that for the rest of the season there will be no problem for us.

"It was our best performance for a long time, we kept the ball well and created good chances.

"It reminds me of last season when we began well, then had a bad spell but finished by playing great football in the last ten games.

"We played better good football at Southampton, even with ten men, but they played long balls for the whole 90 minutes.

"They would probably have played much better if they had Jamie Redknapp or Nigel (Quashie) but they scored with their first shot on target and if they play like that for the rest of the season we may have the chance to send them down in April!"

Pompey will be without Diomansy Kamara tonight following the striker's sending off at St Mary's. His one match ban takes immediate effect.
