COLOURFUL celebrations have taken place across Hampshire to mark the biggest event in the Hindu calendar, Diwali.

Thousands of people joined in events to highlight the religious occasion, known as the Festival of Lights, which commemorates Lord Rama's return from the jungle after 14 years in exile.

Firework displays, Indian dancing and singing performances were just some of the events that took place to celebrate the triumph of good over evil.

A festive feast was in store for workers at Ordnance Survey mapping agency in Romsey Road, Southampton.

The Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Dennis Harryman, was among the guests invited to take part in Diwali presentations of music, dance and culture at the site yesterday.

Organiser Sim Rupra said: "The event went really well and there was a big turnout.

"It is important for Hindus to celebrate this religious occasion and I also think it is important for non-Hindus to understand and learn about our culture and traditions."

Elsewhere, children at Maytree Nursery and Infant in Derby Road, Southampton, took part in a Diwali to raise money for local Asian elderly residents.

Councillor Parvin Darmani switched on the Diwali lights in Derby Road, Southampton, and other celebrations took place at Vedic Hindu Temple in Radcliffe Road, Northam.
