Oklahoma! Gosport Amateur Operatic Society, Ferneham Hall, Fareham

SET at the turn of the 20th century, this is the story of pioneers in a new American state, and particularly the courtship of a rancher (Curly) and a farmer's daughter (Laurey).

A strength of this production was the empathy shown between the two lovers right from the start. Claire Poole and Kevin Silvester - to borrow from another musical - had the right chemistry. Their parodying of People Will Say We're in Love could have been risky in other hands.

A highlight of the show was Many A New Day, sung by Laurey and the ladies' chorus.

Danielle Withers took on the Dream Scene ballet solo effectively, and there was good support from many of the principal leads with Bruce James making the most of his role as Ali Hakim.

Denise Withers (Aunt Eller) gave a lively performance.

Young Clare James (Ado Annie) exhibited a potential for future roles.

The orchestra, led by Albert Hall, provided just the right balance of sound to complement the singers.

Producer Audrey Pring excelled in her direction of chorus numbers, especially the opening of the second act.
