MARCHING for money was the name of the game for one Southampton man who raised £500 for the Royal British Legion.
Ministry of Defence Police Officer Lee Gristwood, 39, of Southampton and his colleague David Whithorn, who both work at the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Berkshire, marched 80 miles in full 1914 British uniform in a re-enactment of the original Retreat from Mons.
The march was organised by the Great War Society, of which PC Gristwood is a member.
Both men joined 50 others who marched from Mons, following the exact route of the British Expeditionary Force on their heroic fighting retreat to St Quentin.
PC Gristwood said: "I cannot begin to imagine what the original soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force endured in those dark days of 1914. However, I have nothing but respect for them, now deepened by my own experiences."
The money will go to the Royal British Legion, which helps many ex-service people and their families.
