A MAN was killed last night after the car he was in crashed during a high-speed police chase in Hampshire.

The man was a passenger in a silver Rover that crashed into a green Citroen Xantia and overturned after being chased by a police car.

The female driver of the Xantia had to be cut free from the wreckage by firefighters and taken to hospital with suspected back and neck injuries.

A further five people described as "walking wounded" were also taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

All emergency services including four ambulances, fire crews from Redbridge station and traffic police were called to the scene in Totton at 8pm last night.

Police closed the residential part of the A36 Salisbury Road where the accident happened to examine the crash scene.

The 30 mile-per-hour road stayed closed for several hours and police continued their investigations of the road until about 6am today.

Salisbury Road resident Laurence Neal spoke of his shock at news of the accident that happened on his doorstep.

He said: "I came home this morning to find my fence all knocked down and my gates pretty much destroyed. I had no idea what happened until I spoke to my neighbour and they told me the bad news that someone had died."

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information is asked to contact the Eastleigh Roads policing unit on 0845 045 4545 quoting Operation Freshfield.
