Winchester planners have rejected a controversial scheme to replace two homes with 14 new ones.

Developers wanted to knock down a bungalow and a house in Westley Close, Weeke, and build five terraced dwellings and a block of nine flats.

The proposal attracted 150 objections from local people, who said the scheme was too dense and unsympathetic to the leafy area.

City councillors objected to the scheme for reasons including design and excessive site coverage. Other objectors included the City of Winchester Trust, Winchester Residents' Association and Hampton Lane Neighbourhood group.

There was also concern about the impact of traffic on local roads and danger to pedestrians.

Rosemary Conway, of Westley Close, said: "The total housing in Westley Close is 18 dwellings and this proposal would dramatically increase the density."

Councillor Anne Saunders, the local ward member, said: "This close is a very important pedestrian route from into town. It is also on Winchester City Council's map for improved cycle routes."

Liz Curran, on behalf of applicants Heritage Property Group, said the scheme had parking within council and government requirements.
