THERE were mixed fortunes for Saints players on international duty last night.

Goalkeeper Antti Niemi was the sole winner as he helped Finland defeat Armenia 2-0.

Anders Svensson started in central midfield for Sweden, who were beaten 1- 0 at home by Croatia.

Svensson went close to giving his country the lead with a first half shot that went just wide.

He was subbed after 73 minutes to be replaced by Norwich City striker Mattias Jonson.

Saints midfielder Mikael Nilsson stayed on the bench throughout the loss.

Claus Lundekvam, pictured, missed a close range header in the dying minutes of Norway's 1-1 home draw with Belarus.

And young midfielder Kenwyne Jones started for Trinidad & Tobago as they were beaten 3-1 at home by Mexico.

Saints have denied an interest in 16-year-old Bulgarian attacker Dimitar Iliev.

The assistant coach of Iliev's club, Georgi Vasilev, told the Bulgarian media: "I know that Iliev is wanted by Southampton but I cannot comment about any aspect of the possibility of a transfer."

However, Saints have refuted the claims that they are looking to bring in Iliev who would cost around £300,000.
