LOCAL anglers dominated the second of the two Portland Breakwater open competitions, which produced a win for Malcolm Stote from Lymington with a 23lb 7oz catch.

Included in Stote's haul was a 3lb 6oz wrasse which also scooped the pools for the day's heaviest fish.

The top junior on the day was 15-year-old Shane Samber from New Milton with 4lb 8oz while the pairs' section was won by Tony O'Grady from Fareham and Lymington's Chris Clark with a combined total of 25lb - included in Clark's catch was the day's heaviest triggerfish.

The runner-up in the event, which attracted nearly 70 competitors, was Andy Parkhill from Fareham with 17lb 1oz, followed by 16-year-old Tom Tarrier who is a member of the host club with 16lb 4oz.

Fourth was New Milton's Bruce Samber with 15lb 4oz then Ian Legg with seven mullet weighing 14lb 12oz. Steve Deathe from Southampton came next with 14lb 1oz, followed by Tony O'Grady from Fareham with 13lb 14oz.

On the local scene some excellent fish have been caught recently with Brendon Archer from the Waterside beaching a superb specimen sole from the Gipsy Lane section at Lepe which weighed to 3lb 1oz.

The 37-year-old office manager used ragworm presented on a size 2 hook to tempt the specimen during a late evening session.

A part from the oversize flattie, which sets a new personal best, Archer also went on to land a brace of small smoothhound along with several silver eels and a sizeable bass.

Not to be outdone, Stuart Freeman, from Hamble, used float tactics along with bread flake to tempt a 6lb 14oz specimen mullet while fishing from the shore of the Hamble River. The 28-year-old labourer used a light freshwater rod along with 6lb main time to a size 8 hook to tempt the specimen along with a number of smaller fish during an action-packed session.

Variety was the key during the Rovers midweek catch and release fixture held along Clarence Sea Wall where 26 competitors recorded a number of smoothhound, silver eels, ballan wrasse, rockling, pouting, black bream, sole, plaice and a surprising number of red mullet.

Fareham's Dave Edwards landed a trio of fish including a beauty which measured in at 35cm. Mike Delaney from Fareham won the event with six smoothhound, three bream and an eel together worth 353 points to nudge out Daniel Mogridge 222, Dave Edwards 185, Chris Clark 123, Andy Parkhill 114 and Mark Camfield 108.

Next match in the open pegged midweek series will be held on September 16 at Stokes Bay with fishing from 8pm to 11.30pm. Details on 01329 220354.

Smoothhound, silver eels and flounders supplied limited action during the ALS Tackle measure and return Friday evening open held along the foreshore at Netley where John Brown was once again in fine form to come out on top with 280 points.

All eyes will be on the stretch of beach running between Boscombe Pier and Solent Road on Saturday evening when Boscombe & Southbourne SFC stage their autumn open shore competition in three zones with fishing from 7pm to midnight.

Tickets are £10 plus a two-man team. Registration and the draw will get under way at the Warren Edge car park from 5.30pm.
