Waltham took their Wessex League tally to six points with a narrow victory over Andover New Street on Tuesday night, but it took an 89th minute goal from full-back Robert Head to do the trick.

Head, who had already surged forward to good effect several times, cut in from the halfway line and planted an excellent shot into the bottom left-hand corner just beyond the fingertips of keeper Sam Baxter.

The only surprise was that the goal had taken so long in coming. Both sides contributed in full to a pacy, entertaining game on a pristine Priory Park pitch, but the home side always held the upper hand and just about deserved their win.

It was tough luck on New Street, though; they've had a rough time, losing nine players during the close season, but must have thought they'd done enough to earn their first point of the season when Head's late, late winner arrived.

Jamie Coleman was at the heart of the visitors' best football with some intelligent running and penetrating crosses. New Street might even have taken the lead when Chris Berntsen was presented with an open goal by a rare desfensive lapse; but his shot hit the outside of the post.

For the most part the Waltham rearguard, with the unflappable Glen Lickman in imposing form, held their opponents at arm's length.

Chris Yoxall (three times) and Tef Edin all had good chances to wrap the game up before Head finally grabbed the goal his team had almost given up hope of getting.
