A WICKHAM woman has blasted planners who gave the go-ahead for a pair of affordable homes next door to her elderly parents.

Jenny Hollis, of Buddens Road, led a band of more than 100 protesters against the plans by Winchester Housing Trust in her street.

She was battling on behalf of her elderly mother and father who believe they will lose light and privacy once the houses are built.

Alf and Joan Stubbington, both disabled and in their 80s, have lived at their home since it was built 56 years ago.

But the group last week lost their battle as Winchester planners decided there is a significant need for affordable housing and the site is suitable for two homes.

Following a site visit, planners could find no reason not to build there.

Mrs Hollis, also of Buddens Road, said: "It's not any less than I expected, but I'm still very disappointed. They weren't really willing to listen, but I've done my best and I can't do any more.

"I'm more concerned for my parents as it's quite a strain on them. My father has gone to bits. He's nearly blind and he's scared this will cut out all their sunshine.

"I think if there was a nuclear bomb on the site that wouldn't even stop them."

Protesters were also concerned about parking, drainage, congestion, noise and damage to neighbouring properties and trees.

But officers found that the development would be in tune with all planning policies.
