SIX of the competition boys' squad from Basingstoke Gymnastic Club finished their competition year on a high by representing the southern region.

They were selected for the Club National Development Plan Finals in Cardiff because of their success in the regional tournament, which their club hosted.

All six put together some outstanding performances, with three of them scoring exceptional totals above 60.00 over the required seven disciplines.

Ben Woolmer finished 22nd overall in the primary three age group while, in the primary two category, Michael Medlock was an outstanding fifth overall, James Livemore 22nd and Jamie Appleton 36th.

In the primary one age group, Tom Forster finished 23rd overall and Sam Lucas 25th.

The boys' coach, Paul Ferris, said: "They have all shown a great deal of dedication in learning and perfecting their routines over the past year and they should all be proud of their achievements.

"We are hoping that this dedication and commitment continues this year so, as coaches, we can help them to break into the top 20 in the country next year."

At the southern region championships, Basingstoke took the gold medal in three of the four age groups they contested, with the top six boys in each going forward to represent the region.

Daniel Woodward won the pre-primary four age group, Michael Medlock primary two and Tom Forster primary one.

Ben Woolmer won silver in primary three and Jamie Appleton silver in primary two.

Rhys Pym took bronze in the pre-primary four category.

The finals in Cardiff were the swansong for senior men's coach Barry Phelan following his decision to step down from his post.

He was happy to see Basingstoke finish as the highest-achieving boys' club within the region.
