Whitchurch (177 all out) beat Compton & Chandlers Ford (105 all out) by 72 runs

Compton slipped to a fifth defeat of the season with a disappointing home display against struggling Whitchurch.

After losing the toss Compton toiled in the heat despite Adam Brown starting his spell with five consecutive maidens.

The visitors rode their luck early on but then established a very healthy position at 95 for 1 (Dodd 58) off 22 overs with Compton having only a solitary run out for their endeavours.

A second run out signalled a change in fortunes as Rob Selwyn (2-8) and Jon Warrick (3-48) worked their way through the middle order.

Whitchurch were eventually bowled out for a respectable 177.

With four heavyweight batsmen (Pritchard, Magee, Scott and Penny) missing from the Compton line-up, much depended on the opening partnership of Jon Warrick and Lee Wateridge, but both were dismissed with only 12 runs on the board.

Andy Gorty (23) and James Lowman (15) dug in to see off the opening bowlers, but there was no respite when the change bowlers operated and wickets soon began to tumble.

Compton could only muster 105 all out as the Whitchurch bowlers maintained a discipline that belied their lowly league position.

Compton's 2nds made Colden Common chase leather in the heat as they piled up 256 for 5 in Division 2 North West.

Julian Croker provided the platform for the total, batting through the innings for a season's best 73 not out. At the other end Jason Lawson (31), Tom Lawrence (20) and Steve Bendall (45) all kept up a healthy strike rate and Darren Davis, with 37 off 20 balls, helped plunder nine an over from the half way mark.

Colden Common made a spirited effort to chase the target with Glen Rix smashing a whirlwind 86 to get the target to 67 off 10 with four wickets in hand. Davis then completed a fine return to form with four wickets to bowl the home side out 20 runs short.

Compton & Chandlers Ford's 3rds suffered their second Division 3 South East defeat in as many weeks to Denmead.

Denmead amassed 199 for 8. In reply CFC could only limp to 118 all out, Fred Bendall top scoring with 45.
