Over 130 people were arrested during the first month of a summer crackdown on drink-related offences, say Hampshire Police.

The Alcohol Misuse Enforcement Campaign, a Home Office drive to tackle alcohol-related crime, was launched on July 8th.

The police say that 137 arrests were made across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight as part of the campaign, which has run alongside "Safer Streets" -a bid to drive down disorder.

Said Assistant Chief Constable Simon Cole: "There will be no let-up in our drive to tackle drink-fuelled crime across the two counties."

A total of 65 fixed penalty notices were handed out under a scheme, established earlier this year, where people are issued fines for offences. Police gave out 35 fines to people drunk and disorderly, while 30 were imposed for drink-fuelled harassment offences.

Areas singled out as hot spots of criminal activity were also targeted and 17 dispersal orders across the two counties were imposed. These are placed on areas with a history of alcohol-related problems to target people congregating. There were also 60 instances of alcohol seized and ten cases where alcohol was confiscated from youths.

Officers visited 435 pubs and clubs and 43 off-licences during the month. Mr Cole said: "The constabulary is committed to working with trading standards officers, pubs and retailers in a targeted programme of enforcement to use their powers to prevent sales to people under-age or serving beyond licensed hours."
