VERWOOD Town sprung the surprise of the opening day in Wessex Division 3 with an impressive 2-0 win at the much-fancied Colden Common.

"We rode our luck sometimes and it was a bit of a smash n' grab raid," admitted Verwood manager Terry Richens.

"As a team we've defended very well, Common have hit the woodwork twice and we have hit them with two goals on the break.

"Having said that, we did come here with a plan and it has worked very well for us."

Verwood struck first on the half hour when Andy Wooding beat two Common defenders and netted with an angled drive which flew in off the upright.

Luke Homer rubbed salt in home wounds after 70 minutes as he broke down the left before coolly chipping the keeper.

Richens added: "It's always important to get off to a good start - especially as there's only 41 league games to go!"

Clanfield's Gary Firbank was both villian and hero as his side battled back from 2-0 down at home to Overton to secure a 2-2 draw.

Firbank's own goal helped put Overton 2-0 up but Ben Sutherland reduced the deficit for Clanfield right on the stroke of half-time before Firbank turned hero as his late header rescued a point.

Two late goals saw Paulsgrove spoil QK Southampton's home-warming party at Lordshill Recreation Ground.

The visitors took a 43rd-minute lead through Martin Whittaker from the penalty spot after he had been brought down.

But the Taxmen were back on terms just moments later when Wayne West crashed home a thumping 30-yard free-kick.

A share of the spoils looked on the cards until late blows by Steve Knight (83) and Ben Stabb (89) gave Paulsgrove a 3-1 success.

Ordnance Survey also left it late before grabbing a 1-1 draw with Hayling United.

Tom Chapman gave the visitors the lead on 35 minutes with Survey snatching a point courtesy of a 90th minute Graham Young penalty.

Tadley Calleva left it even later with a 92th minute point-saver in their 1-1 draw with Netley Central Sports at The Green.

Paul Myburgh capitalised on a defensive mix-up to give Netley the lead on 18 minutes, and they held on until two minutes into injury time when Danny Peters slotted home Pete White's cross.
