ONE of the stars of the former Southampton speedway track, Alby Golden, has died at the age of 73.
Mr Golden worked in Husband's shipyard, Marchwood, for 37 years and, during his speedway career, managed to fit in the sport alongside his full-time job.
A favourite with the Southampton crowd for his whole-hearted style of riding, he moved on to Wales only after the Southampton track closed and became captain of the Newport Wasps in 1964.
He made one appearance for England in the late 1960s, versus the USSR, but his career ended in 1970 after he broke his leg in a crash.
Alby Golden was born in Lyndhurst and lived in the area all his life. He leaves a widow, three children and seven grandchildren.
