SOUTHAMPTON will host the largest Race for Life event in the country - thanks to the 8,000-plus women who have signed up so far.

Organiser Karina Morgan was absolutely delighted when Southampton took the number one slot.

"I am so pleased that Southampton will have the biggest race out of 150 in the country. It is great for the city that the largest Race for Life in the country will take place here.

"I'd like to give a big pat on the back to all the women who have signed up so far," she said.

Cardiff has previously played host to the largest field but now Southampton has taken the lead - and the final figure for the city's race could be as high as 8,500.

"We are at 8,167 - that's 20 more than Cardiff. Entries can be taken until July 11 so we could reach 8,500 and that would be amazing," said Karina.

The race, which could net up to £500,000, takes place on Southampton Common on Sunday, July 18. Each entrant will run or walk around the 5km course to raise money for cancer research.

Across the UK 325,000 women are expected to run, jog and walk to raise funds and Cancer Research UK hopes to raise £20m for research into the prevention, treatment and cure of cancer.

"If you are not able to take part in the run you can still do your bit to help on the day," said Karina.

"I am looking for volunteers to help us get set up in the morning and help with marshalling and handing out medals and water.

"If your wife or girlfriend is taking part and you want to come along on the day and be a volunteer, I would love to hear from you," she said.
