A sprinkling of local runners enjoyed a light-hearted dress rehearsal for tomorrow's Brading 10k on the Isle of Wight, which marks the end of the Hampshire Road Race League season.

They survived oven-like temperatures to tackle the annual Braishfield Beer five-mile event, which offers a free pint to all finishers.

Bournemouth's Mark Hargreaves, pictured left, won from Southampton Running Club regulars Pete Davis (second, 27.13) and Matt West (third, 28.11).

Just behind them was Lucy Elliott, the Chandler's Ford-based international who runs for Shaftesbury Barnet but races and trains in south Hampshire. She was the first lady home in 28.41, placing her fifth overall.

The Brading 10k is the tenth event of the HRRL series, which began last September at Overton and has covered races from five miles up to 20 miles.

Competing clubs are allowed to discard their two worst results from the season, with the exception of the final race, the Brading event, which is mandatory for all teams intending to finish the campaign.

Winchester & District AC dominate both the men's and women's Division 1 tables and only need to turn up to win both league trophies.

Runners-up position for the men will be between Southampton RC and Denmead Striders in the top flight, while Stubbington Green should win Division 2 ahead of Overton.

In the top division of the women's league it will be between Alton and Denmead for runners-up spot, with Southampton RC and Stubbington promising to make the leap up from Division 2.

Last year's individual winner, Southampton-based Andy Morgan-Lee, won with ease and is planning to return to defend his title, albeit with first claim club Salford.
