Fareham MP, Mark Hoban, today accused the government of dragging its heels over multi-million-pound improvements to the M27.

Ministers backed recommendations last year to add climbing lanes between junction 11 and 12 close to Fareham and widen the motorway between junctions 3 and 4 near Southampton.

Traffic chiefs are aiming to crack the congestion, which causes frustrating delays on the motorway linking Southampton and Portsmouth.

Hundreds of motorists are forced to sit in frustrating snarl-ups, especially during rush hours. But nearly a year on, no progress has been made, according to Mr Hoban, pictured.

The Conservative front-bencher said: "This is another example of the government letting down south-east Hampshire. Ministers are dragging their feet on the South Hampshire Rapid Transit Scheme.

"Now they are delaying announcing the start dates for these much-needed improvements. While the government dithers, our roads grind to a halt."

In a letter to Mr Hoban, junior transport minister, Tony McNulty, said it could be several months before the scheme receives a green light. He said: "I expect to report early next year on its possible inclusion in the programme of improvements planned by the Department for Transport."
