A POINT in the right direction is the aim of an orienteering course for primary school children.

Swanmore Primary School has set up the new course with the help of Cams Hill School in Fareham so that youngsters aged four to 11 can learn to find their way.

Geography teacher Karen Phethean said a grant from beacon-status Cams Hill meant they had the staff and resources to set up the scheme.

"It is a way of using the school grounds and bringing teaching out of the classroom - although today it is a little waterlogged!" she said.

Pupils will be given books with instructions taking them from place to place around the grounds, with the starting point being a new ornamental compass.

The compass has been painted by a local sign-writer and will help students find their way as they start the orienteering course.
