BASINGSTOKE'S "Mr Football" Peter Raynbird retired as Hon General Secretary at the Basingstoke and District Football League 101st AGM last Friday.

Raynbird said: "It was time to hand over to someone younger and with more enthusiasm than myself after completing 50 years in the job."

He told more than 200 people at the event that when he was first elected, in 1953, it was the golden jubilee of the league and the biggest task was to organise the dinner and other events to celebrate the occasion.

In the past season, the league has celebrated its centenary with a dinner attended by several FA dignitaries including the chairman Geoff Thompson.

Raynbird thanked the league for the wonderful gift of a glass jug, inscribed tray and glasses which were presented to himself and his wife Iris.

He also spoke of his involvement with Norman Gannaway in co-writing the Centenary Book, which is still available to buy.

Other events in a memorable season included the representative match against Hampshire FA XI, which was won 5-0, and the successful six-a-side tournament.

Raynbird said: "I wish to thank the centenary committee, for the work they have put in to make this season a memorable one."

He added: "Over the past 50 years, I have seen many changes in football in the county and also in the league.

"I feel clubs have been fortunate to have had, and still do have, officers and committee men who have dedicated themselves in making this league one of, if not the finest, in the county.

"I have worked with some fine chairmen, and would like to take this opportunity in thank all those who have assisting me over the years and not forgetting you club secretaries."

He will continue as Saturday match and registration secretary and press officer for the coming season.

He hoped the same co-operation will be given to his successor June Balcombe as Hon General Secretary for the coming season.

Chairman Barrie Hiscock then thanked him for his valuable service to the league over the past 51 years.

There was only one change to the officers as John Edwards replaced Alan Blenkarn as minute secretary.

Jim Johnston was made a Life Vice President after 25 years on the management committee and two Sunday League committee men, George Hodgson and Dennis Smith, were made Vice Presidents.

Newly elected to the Sunday section committee were Nick Kemp, John Jarvis and Tim Winter.
